Art is One of the Last Good Things We Have Left

•

There have been moments recently when being in the studio has felt slightly strange against the backdrop of everything happening in the world. I found myself saying to a friend the other day, also an artist, that what we do can sometimes feel small or unimportant when so much around us feels uncertain.

She reminded me of something simple but important: that the way we work allows us to be present for our families, and that in itself matters deeply. She also said that putting energy into making, into creating something thoughtful and lasting, is its own way of contributing something positive.

Not long after, she sent me a quote from Tracey Emin that stayed with me: "Art is one of the last good things we have left." I have thought about that often since, not because art changes everything, but because it quietly insists on reflection, care, and attention. Qualities that feel worth holding onto.
